Plantar Fasciitis (Plantar Fascitis)

Plantar Fasciitis (Plantar Fascitis) is a specific form of Tendonitis that affects the bottom of the foot (otherwise known as the plantar surface of the foot). This condition is characterized by pain and tenderness of the fascia (a form of fibrous tissue) on the bottom of the foot. The pain is usually worse with prolonged standing or walking. It is a very common condition in runners and hikers.

Although Plantar Fasciitis (Plantar Fascitis) pain stems from inflammation, the cause of the inflammation must be treated in order for complete recovery and long-lasting benefit to be achieved. Over time, repetitive injury (as seen with marathon runners) and chronic joint dysfunction of the feet (as seen with someone that is “flat footed”) contribute to chronic shortening of the plantar fascia. This constant “tugging” on the fascia leads to micro-tears (microscopic tears of the plantar fascia) which are nearly always accompanied by inflammation. Eventually, scar tissue adhesions will form which further reduce the flexibility of the plantar fascia making the tissue even more vulnerable to injury.
